Medication Fears

Start Low and Go Slow

Parents often suspect or know that their child has ADHD for months or years before they actually seek treatment. One of the most common reasons for this delay is fear of medication side effects. Some parents may have experienced an adverse reaction themselves, or observed this in a family member or someone close to them. Should you decide upon a trial of medication, Dr. Ludlow’s goal is to optimally manage your child’s ADHD symptoms while allowing their best selves to shine through. It is not necessary or acceptable for your child to become a “zombie” or endure significant side effects while taking medication. To that end, treatment must be individualized to each patient and it can take time to find the right medication and dose. “Start low and go slow” has always been Dr. Ludlow’s guiding principal. Patience, frequent communication and regular follow up are essential during this process.
